India Khasi Hills Tanzania Agroforestry Copperbelt Zambia

In the Meghalaya state lies the 'wettest place on earth'. In the East Khasi Hills, WeForest partners with a federation of 10 indigenous governments and 62 Khasi villages to restore areas of forest through assisted natural regeneration and to combat the issues that threaten the forest, including charcoal making, grazing and forest fires. Communities are empowered to take ownership of their natural capital and restore the degraded forest areas. Self-help groups, farmer's clubs, home-based nurseries and more are established to promote sustainable entrepreneurship and economic development among the local villagers. To avoid further deforestation and switch to a more forest-friendly lifestyle, the project is installing fuel-efficient cooking stoves and rice cookers for the 3,500 households in the project area. As a result of this activity, pollution and fuelwood consumption will be reduced and health of the forest protected.

One of the best ways to get more trees is to ask everyone to plant some. In the Rorya District of Tanzania, near the village of Kinesi, seedlings are grown in a nursery and distributed to the people that need it most: women-lead households or families hosting orphans get priority. Local schools also get seedlings (often fruit trees) to plant on their school premises. The project furthermore provides training in sustainable agricultural practices including permaculture so that the trees can also boost agriculture yield and food production. These families now enjoy with larger and diversified incomes , better food and can even pay for medicine. WeForest has worked in Tanzania since 2011 with Global Resource Alliance.

In Zambia’s Copperbelt province, WeForest partners with hundreds of small-scale farmers to restore degraded miombo woodlands on their farms. Farmers agree to protect and regenerate native forest using techniques like Assisted Natural Regeneration (ANR) and agroforestry, while receiving training, tools, and sustainable livelihood options (e.g., beekeeping, fruit trees) to replace income from activities like charcoal production. This approach boosts forest recovery, biodiversity, climate resilience, and rural incomes, linking communities to markets to make the initiative economically sustainable.
